Julie Newberg: Full Artist Spotlight

Julie forms stunning ceramics pieces. Her pottery is comforting and nuanced. She is always playing with her work and that joy comes through in each piece she makes.

Here’s our full interview with Julie in her own words:

How did you get started creating your pieces?

I started taking pottery classes a long time ago at the Phoenix Center for the Arts and was immediately hooked. I love the creative process of ceramics.

What’s the favorite part of your work/what you make?

It's satisfying when I master a new form, for example a lidded jar that turns out well or larger bowls and plates. It's also gratifying to hear from friends who love a certain piece and use it as one of their favorites.

How do you express your creativity through your work?

Playing with the colors of the glazes is my favorite part of the ceramics process. I like to try new combinations and techniques to see what color combinations work well. I've always been partial to blues, purples and reds, but I'm currently exploring color combinations that work with the earthy shades of shino.

What brings you joy?

Creating a piece that works well in every aspect of the process is satisfying from throwing to trimming to glazing and firing.

What challenge(s) have you overcome?

Becoming a little bit better through the years in incremental steps is frustrating at times when you want to make great strides. Being patient with yourself is helpful in creating ceramics.

Anything exciting in the works/coming up for you?

The pandemic has resulted in a cabinet full of pieces since things really slowed down. I'm hoping that things start to pick up more so work can be shared more widely.

What do you wish for the world?

I wish many things for the world. Chief among them are leaving this world better for our children by taking steps that make a real and lasting difference in ending global warming and ending the political discord that pulls our country apart.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know?

I'm always happy to hear from individuals who are interested in my work and welcome comments/inquiries to julie@mogollonenv.com
